A Startling Truth
Fellow readers,
Bragging about how much you read to a librarian is much like bragging about your sex life to a porn star. Chances are, you just can’t compete. It’s great that you read quickly. It’s wonderful that you read so much. It’s absolutely grand that you love reading.
But I work in a place filled with books and because of that I tend to go home to a house filled with books. I have a lurking fear that, on my death bed, my last words will be “But I haven’t finished this chapter.” So be happy with your books and with what you read. Don’t waste your time with lousy books when there are so many good ones out there.
But don’t brag to librarians about the amount of material you read through in a given time. For you, books are entertainment or perhaps books are your passion. For us, it’s our lifestyle.
